Kathy Johnson’s first official art class began at the age of four. Once she saw the paint and learned the word magenta her world was never the same. Since art school Kathy has studied with the likes of Charles Reid, Barbara Nechis and Carol Schwennesen both abroad and in the U.S. Kathy’s travel focus has been Latin America, her first trip to Guatemala was in 1978. She has been in love with the colors, the country and the people ever since. In over 20 years of visiting and collecting she has acquired an intimate knowledge of Guatemalan folk arts and backstrap weaving as well as painting experience on location and in the studio. Kathy’s work has been shown across the U.S. and hangs in collections in the U.S., Guatemala and Belize. Kathy lives on Vashon Island, Wa. which just happens to be the sister city of Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala, that can’t be a coincidence!
Kathy has worked with artists from the ages of 15 – 101, all skill levels are welcome, Guatemala has something for everyone. Come discover the deep magic of Lake Atitlan in the “land of eternal spring.” The workshop focus will be on watercolor, we will also touch upon sketching, sketch books, travel journals and collage. We will explore capturing the spirit of place as a group and on an individual basis. Visit her website here.
