CULTURAL TOUR OF GUATEMALA, EASTER 2016
Join Jan Ledbetter, award winning artist and experienced world traveler, on her eighth trip to Guatemala. During this CULTURAL TOUR to the ancient and vibrant land of the Maya during Easter week (March 17 – 27, 2016), you will experience Semana Santa in Antigua, one of the most spectacular and elaborate religious events in the Americas. Surrounded by three volcanoes: Agua, Fuego and Acatenango, Antigua is a fascinating town of colonial tranquility and Mayan color. Never is this more evident than during the week of Semana Santa or Holy Week, where the cobbled streets are transformed into colorful carpets made from colored sawdust, flowers and pine needles. Follow the warming aroma of incense and you will soon find one of over a dozen religious processions, where the remarkable center piece is a large wooden float (anda) depicting a scene from the Passion of Jesus Christ.
This magical travel experience includes among other highlights, visit to a private home; Indigenous Maya markets, villages, and many special cultural experiences. You will witness the Maya who still live and survive as they have for hundreds of years; people who are happy and at peace with the beauty they are able to weave into their textiles, with the produce they grow and sell at their markets, with a blend of pagan rituals and Christian beliefs, and with simple lives not totally influenced by the need for modern technology. The Spanish influence on architecture and design, blended with many other cultures offers up a landscape for you to discover and explore.
So, pack your bags and get your expectations in gear for this travel experience of a lifetime to Guatemala, where the rich tapestry of ancient Maya cultures and traditions woven in with historical European influences has all come together; where extinct volcanoes and ancient earthquakes have created one of the most beautiful countries in the world; where you will enter into a provocative existence of ancient civilization with western influences.
